Tom's Territory

The collection of paintings and drawings that make up the Tom's Territory series are based on a specific area of land to the west of Doncaster.  Some are simple recordings, some are interpretations while others stretch into the world of dreamscapes.

Tom was a poacher in the 1940s and 50s and these fields were his hunting ground for rabbits and the occasional pheasant.

There is a family connection between Chipp and Tom. As Chipp walks the tracks and lanes with his sketchbook he is aware that Tom also walked here some 70 years before but his was a twilight world.  Chipp's sketches capture the rise and fall of the land and the patterns of the hedgerows that lay across it.  In his studio he transforms them into night scenes as he attempts to see the land through Tom's eyes.
